There are many misconceptions including over and underestimating the role of food in skin conditions. Thinking that supplements can improve your skin, or adhering to an expensive skin care regime, or gut killing antibiotic treatment to enhance skin health needs to be re-looked at.
I first broke out in acne at the age of 18 when I was in my first year of college. Of course, I put it down to the stress of my studies, a new environment and having to make new friends.
I didn’t think it could be the side cravings of Doritos, McDonald’s, and Pizza Hut, I was consuming even though I ate fairly healthy, when I wasn’t indulging in said cravings.
However, the “healthy eating” on top of the junk I was consuming, was silently contributing to my skin health and feeding Streptococcus bacteria in my body.
How does this bacteria enter your body? The bacteria can be picked up from door knobs, toilet seats, and public place like restaurants, schools etc. Kissing and sexual contamination is also a very real cause.
If you’ve ever had a really bad sore throat, you probably didn’t realise it was actually strep throat. If you’ve suffered from bronchitis, tonsillitis and sinus issues, then you need to know the underlying cause is streptococcus.
It can be triggered by stress, hence the fact that most teens experience bouts of acne while going through puberty, hormonal changes and during their time at college or university – but let me emphasise that stress is not the cause.
More men and women have adult acne, having never fully recovered from their teen acne, and have been fighting it all their lives. Again, this is strep bacteria having permeated into their organs wreaking havoc.
HOW TO HEAL
Streptococcus sits in the liver and lymph, this in itself will contribute to a compromised digestive system, especially if you were given antibiotics, like I was for years – resulting in a weakened gut and lymphatic system.
When healing the body of any pathogen, it is essential to cleanse the liver, stomach and lymphatic system.
The liver becomes sluggish and stagnant, unable to remove debris in order to function. The stomach’s hydrochloric acid is so weak it cannot break down proteins in food, causing putrefaction, and finally the lymphatic system becomes clogged with mucus and toxins. All three need to work optimally in order to have a healthy digestive system and to be ill-ness free.
WHAT NOT TO EAT
There are reports that people who go on elimination diets are depriving their bodies of essential nutrients. This couldn’t be further from the truth as these foods actually feed streptococcus and need to be avoided until you have fully cleared your acne and any sinus issues.
Eggs – strep loves eggs, making this the number one food to avoid. Consuming eggs will load the lymphatic system with mucus.
Dairy – it’s important to eliminate all dairy products from your diet as they are mucus forming and feed the bacteria.
Gluten – another food that feeds strep. Avoiding all grains can accelerate the healing process.
Corn – even non-GMO varieties feed strep. Avoid at all times.
Canola oil – highly inflammatory and feeds strep
FOODS THAT HEAL
Loading up on the following foods will remove bacteria while flooding your body with nutrients, vitamins, amino acids and healing properties.
Garlic and red onion: antibacterial and anti-virus; can kill strep bacteria
Leafy greens: mucus fighting and eliminates lymphatic edema
Cucumbers: helps to cleanse the lymphatic system
Berries: all varieties especially wild blueberries (usually found in the frozen foods)
Herbs: thyme, oregano, peppermint, turmeric, cayenne, ginger
Other: apples, sweet potatoes, squash, tomatoes, and red bell pepper
